nod to the nineties

As you probably all know by now, I’m a fairly nostalgic person. So, when I put this outfit on, I knew I was drawn to it because of its 90s feel. As my girlfriend put it, it’s my “90s coffeehouse look…maybe Phoebe at Central Perk or Blossom hanging out.” …that pretty much covers it.

Sweater: Gap ($12 marked down from approx $55)

Leggings: Limited (approx $10 many years ago!)

Boots: DSW ($15 marked down from $50)

Fashion Huntress tips:

1) I’m normally big on belts. I rarely layer bulky/flowy pieces without a belt. But, in the interest of ‘change it up 2014,’ I decided to try something different and ditch the belt. I ended up liking the look. Though, for the record, I kept a belt in my purse all day in case I changed my mind! One way to change up looks is to add a belt, remove a belt, change your tights, change jewelry, etc. All of those changes would change this look and allow for more usage of the dress and sweater as one outfit.

2) Sweaters over dresses. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, this is a brilliant strategy for getting more uses out of dresses (that I take no credit for). I last featured this dress as a dress:

I loved this dress as a skirt, however, and it was good way to winterize an otherwise warmer weather dress. I haven’t found many dresses that can’t be layered/styled into skirts, so give it a try with your own dresses!

How does everyone else feel about layering without belts? Is it a fashion do or a fashion don’t?

Happy Sunday, all! I hope everyone had a good weekend! Thank you so much for stopping by!

  1. Heeey, I’ve just finished styling about 5-6 outfits with one of my summer dresses. And now here I am looking at your post that pretty much sums up what I put together: the same summer dress with a belt, without a belt, with a shirt, with a sweater, as a dress, as a skirt, the posibilities are infinite actually 🙂

    Xoxo,

  2. Love this outfit! Totally wearable with a little bit of throwback nineties vibe. I like this look on you sans the belt x

  3. It looks great! I personally hate the belt, it seems to be a fix for everything, but a lot of times people don’t even try to style something, thinking – Oh the belt will fix it – I wore a sweater over a dress on Friday and it ended up looking similar to your outfit, and I loved it, and everyone loved it! I say NO to the belt!

  4. ooh, this brings back memories of how my friends and I used to dress as teenagers in the 90s! I think I even had a jumper very similar. Only I would have worn Doc Marten boots with the outfit instead as I was pretty obsessed with them from about 1992 to 1995

  5. I’m a 90s fan too, so it’s no surprise this is one of my favourite-ever outfits of yours – you look FAB! In terms of the belt, I think that because your sweater is a little cropped, it actually acts like a belt to define your waist. It’s the non-belt belt!

  6. I have been totally feeling the 90s lately, so I especially love this. I like a defined waist typically as well, but there’s just something so easy and effortless about a loose sweater that I equally love
